Global in-situ river discharge, runoff data now publicly available

July 29, 2020

The Global Runoff Data Centre (GRDC), on behalf of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has made in-situ streamflow data publicly available.

A new web portal makes up to 30 years of quality-assured data accessible. Daily and historical means, annual statistics, and seasonal variability graphs can be downloaded with a few clicks.

Using a browser, users can explore maps and intuitively select their basin(s) of interest.

Tables, filters, search and sorting tools further assist users. Easily identify monitoring stations included in one convenient download.

The open data sets can help evaluate and calibrate hydrologic models. Alternatively, the in-situ data can validate remote sensing data.

Streamflow data sets are provided in a variety of formats including WaterML2, the technical standard for exchange and representation of water observation data.

The GRDC Data Download Portal represents the most comprehensive global archive of river discharge from international and transnational projects. The underlying database connects federal and national hydrological and hydro-meteorological services, the primary meta data and data providers, and the scientific research community.
